Governor Bose seeks report from state govt over violence during Kali puja

West Bengal Governor Dr. CV Anand Bose has formally requested a detailed report from the state government following recent riots during Kali Puja in Kolkata’s Narkeldanga and Howrah areas. According to the Governor's office, this action follows mounting concerns from opposition parties and citizens over the state's law and order situation.

A statement from Raj Bhavan shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) confirmed the request. The message noted that the Governor is keen to address public concerns and ensure accountability regarding security and public order during major events and festivals. The Governor has additionally directed state officials to take heightened security measures for upcoming festivals, aiming to prevent similar incidents.

According to police sources, the clashes originated from a local dispute over bike parking in Narkeldanga, escalating into a larger conflict between two groups. A police officer suffered injuries in the incident and was taken to the hospital, where his condition is reported as stable. Law enforcement officials clarified that the clash was unrelated to the Kali Puja immersion procession, as previously speculated by some, and was solely an isolated parking dispute.

Police responded swiftly to manage the situation, ensuring the Kali Puja immersion continued without disruption. Officers dispersed the crowd, and the area was brought under control.

With the festival season in full swing, the Governor has underscored the importance of maintaining public order and directed the government to increase police vigilance across the state. By examining the report, Raj Bhavan aims to assess the state’s preparedness in handling large gatherings and anticipate any potential threats to public peace.
